Nyungnay Purification Retreat

Purify negative karma and receive powerful blessings at this special annual fasting retreat. 

What is Nyungnay Purification Retreat?

This special fasting and purification retreat is performed in conjunction with the meditation practice of Thousand-armed Avalokiteshvara.

Engaging in this retreat is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech and mind and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special method for receiving the blessings of Buddha and improving our experience of love, compassion and bodhichitta (the wish to attain enlightenment for the benefit of all).

Usually this practice is done over two days, with the Mahayana precepts* being taken at the beginning of each day. On the first day it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch.

On the second day we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours. On both days, we do three sessions of meditation, combining prostrations with chanted meditation. Those who are unable to engage in a complete fast can participate in the sessions on the second day, provided they take the Mahayana precepts on that day.

*The Mahayana precepts are vows we take to abstain from certain actions for the duration of 24 hours. Please see the Pure Life sadhana for more infomation, or ask our Education Program Coordinator, Maz. Please register your interest in attending this special Retreat by emailing.

Guru Yoga and Mandala Offering Retreat

Guru Yoga and Mandala offering retreat combines two of the four great preliminary guides that we need to practice if we want to gain mahamudra realisations – the quick path to enlightenment.

We all wish for spiritual realisations, but these depend upon creating certain inner conditions such as purifying negativity, accumulating merit, and receiving blessings.

In this retreat we focus on the preliminary practices of accumulating merit and receiving blessings. Making mandala offerings is the gateway to accumulating the collection of merit and attaining an enlightened pure land and Guru yoga is the gateway to receiving powerful blessings of all the Buddhas of the ten directions through our Spiritual Guide.

There will be three sessions over the day.

THE RETREAT

During a retreat we reduce our normal worldly activities and concentrate for a period of time on developing spiritual qualities and peaceful minds.

Each session lasts for one and a half hours and consists of prayers sung in English and silent mandala offerings. Sessions are free. Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled session to familiarize yourself with the practice. Please bring your mandala kit if you have one.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Treat yourself to a relaxing morning of gentle guided meditations. Temporarily retreat from the busyness of life and give yourself some much-needed time out to truly relax your body and mind. The morning will include three sessions guided by our Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Tsalden, who has almost 20 years’ meditation experience. During the breaks, you can enjoy some delicious home-baked treats. Everyone is welcome.
 

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

Take a break from the busyness of life and enjoy some gentle, guided meditations.

Buddhist meditation involves staying alert and keeping our back straight, so we sit on chairs for the duration of the course. There’s no need to bring anything, although you may wish to bring some water and a jacket. Refreshments are provided in the break session.

Attendees come from all walks of life and there’s no need to have any meditation experience as all meditations are guided.  Everyone is welcome.

Gen Kelsang Lhachog is the Resident Teacher of Ganden Kadampa Buddhist Centre on the Gold Coast. Gen Lhachog has been studying and practising Kadampa Buddhism for nearly 30 years and she presents Buddha’s teachings with beautiful clarity, warmth and sincerity, skilfully guiding people from all walks of life to find inner peace and happiness.
