About This Understanding Death Workshop

We are alive therefore we will die. This is the simplest, most obvious truth. But what is death, and what happens when we die? Contemplating our own mortality leads to a profoundly worry-free and happy life, and inspires us to prepare for this inevitable event so we can face it without fear.

In this workshop Gen Kelsang Tsalden will explain the powerful Buddhist meditation on death. We will learn how understanding death enables us to live lightly and is one of the kindest and wisest things we can do for both ourself and others.

  • How to think differently about death
  • How the simple truth of our impermanence can make us live more lightly 
  • How acknowledging our own death helps us to be worry-free and live a happy life.

With 14 years experience as a Resident Teacher her clear, light-hearted, inspiring teachings and gentle manner make Buddhist wisdom accessible to all.

The title ‘Gen’ (pronounced with a ‘g’ as in good) indicates that Gen Tsalden is a senior Teacher.

Does the holiday season already feel like it was months ago? Is your mind too overloaded to start another busy year?

Meditation is a way of calming the mind, reducing stress and developing a more positive approach to life.

This course provides the perfect opportunity to discover for yourself the inner peace and happiness that naturally arises when our mind becomes still.

Learn what’s really making our mind feel busy and overloaded and how, through Buddha’s wisdom, we can develop a calm and spacious mind. Make 2026 your year of peace. Everyone is welcome.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

There are two sessions in each workshop. They consist of an introduction, simple breathing meditation and teaching and conclude with a contemplative meditation on the teaching from that session.

Buddhist meditation involves staying alert and keeping our back straight, so we sit on chairs for the duration of the course. There’s no need to bring anything, although you may wish to bring some water and a jacket. Refreshments are provided in the break session.

LEARN TO MEDITATE

Through the practice of meditation we can develop and maintain a peaceful mind all the time. If our mind is peaceful all the time, we will be happy all the time. So, if we really wish for ourself and others to be happy all the time we must learn to practise meditation.

Frustration and irritation are very common experiences for us, and they afflict our mind almost every day. To solve the problem of this anger, we first need to recognize it within our own mind, acknowledge how it harms both ourself and others, and then appreciate the benefits of being patient when we encounter frustrating situations.

THE ART OF CHILLING OUT

Frustration and irritation are very common experiences for us, and they afflict our mind almost every day. To solve the problem of this anger, we first need to recognize it within our own mind, acknowledge how it harms both ourself and others, and then appreciate the benefits of being patient when we encounter frustrating situations.

At this workshop, Gen Tsalden will guide us through the stages of recognising and reducing our minds of anger and frustration, with practical methods for letting go of this destructive mental habit in our daily life.

TIME: 10am to 1pm

COST: $40 (Early bird price. Book before 13 August – $45 after this date).

What To Expect

There are two sessions in each workshop. They consist of an introduction, simple breathing meditation and teaching and conclude with a contemplative meditation on the teaching from that session.

Buddhist meditation involves staying alert and keeping our back straight, so we sit on chairs for the duration of the course. There’s no need to bring anything, although you may wish to bring some water and a jacket. Refreshments are provided in the break session.

Attendees come from all walks of life and there’s no need to have any meditation experience as all meditations are guided.  Everyone is welcome.

The Teacher

Gen Kelsang Tsalden is a fully ordained, western Buddhist nun and Resident Teacher of Ganden Kadampa Buddhist Centre on Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Ordained in 2006 by her Teacher – fully accomplished meditation master and internationally renowned teacher of Buddhism, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, Gen Tsalden has studied and practiced Kadampa Buddhism for almost 20 years, both in Australia and the UK. 

With 14 years experience as a Resident Teacher Gen Tsalden imparts a deep, personal experience of the practice of Buddhism in daily life. Her clear, warm and light hearted delivery of profound, life-changing Buddhist teachings, has seen a new generation of young Gold Coasters discovering and using these practical, logical and helpful instructions, to solve their daily problems and increase their happiness and peace of mind.

HELPING ON THE DAY

You are very welcome to arrive early and help our volunteers set up for the day. We also need help packing and cleaning up afterwards. If you’d like to stay and help, you are most welcome to.

We are located behind Spaghetti and Jazz in Lakeview Plaza. You can enter the shopping plaza via Commerce Drive or Ron Penhaligon Way.
